Alfonsina y el mar

The song / La canción

Alfonsina y el mar is a zamba composed by the Argentine pianist Ariel Ramírez and the writer Félix Luna, first published on the álbum Mujeres argentinas by Mercedes Sosa, 1969. The song is a tribute to Alfonsina Storni (May 29, 1892 – October 25, 1938), one of the most important Argentine and Latin-American poets and writers of the modernist period. The zamba refers to extracts from Storni’s last poem “Voy A Dormir” (I’m going to sleep) she had sent off to La Nación newspaper prior to committing suicide in El Mar del Plata. Recurring themes in her poetry are struggle, audacity, love and a vindication of the feminine gender.

How did this book come about? The truth? By chance. Or destiny.

In 2011, I helped at a charity concert with Sexteto Milonguero performing that night. Similar to many people in Germany I knew nothing about tango, neither music nor dance, and I didn't speak any Spanish. As I was working simultaneously I could only listen to two, three songs before and after the interval. It was a profound experience…incredibly powerful…I did not perceive anything around me… only the music… loud… touching… reaching my innermost being… taking me on a roller coaster of mixed feelings.
